The Society of United Professionals is a union of more than 10,000 professionals including engineers, scientists, managers, supervisors, and lawyers.
Society members can be found in workplaces such as Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, Ontario Energy Board, IESO, Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, Aboriginal Legal Services, Legal Aid Ontario, National Judicial Institute, and more. For over eight decades, the Society has developed a distinctive approach to labour negotiations that focuses on developing solutions rather than creating conflict.
The Society has 30 full-time staff, with specialities in negotiation, workplace advocacy, communications, education, training, government relations, membership engagement, research, IT, and administrative support. In addition, the Society is Local 160 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), who have been representing professionals since 1918 and currently act on behalf of 90,000 members across North America.
The Society has highly developed democratic structures, policies, and practices that ensures the organization runs according to the interests and values of the membership. As a Local under the Society structure, SCMMA members would maintain a high level of autonomy in membership representation, but gain access to a much larger pool of resources and support.
